In his career, Gunner earned over $170,000 in National Reining Horse Association competition. He was the NRHA Futurity Reserve Champion in 1996, then tied for Reserve at the National Reining Breeders Classic in 1998. The charismatic stallion with the distinctive white markings and signature floppy ears went on to even greater success when he won the 2001 USET Reining Championship. From the preliminaries through the finals, he was unbeaten and untied. He came back and won the USET Semi-Finals in 2002, becoming the only horse to twice win that event. He was honored as the USET Breyer Horse in 2002, with a model made of his likeness. A paint world champion and the highest earning paint horse in history, Gunner was inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame in 2003. He was originally registered as a paint (APHA Colonelsmokingun) because his distinctive white markings made him ineligible for registration in the American Quarter Horse Association, then he was given his AQHA papers (AQHA Colonels Smokin Gun) in 2004.
