On June 30, 2011, Mandy McCutcheon was inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame, joining dad, Tim McQuay, Hollywood Dun It, Miss Okie Too, and Gunner. Read her speech below, commemorating this milestone event!

“Thank you, Frank. I know you had a great deal to do with my induction. Thank you and the entire Hall of Fame committee. This is an honor that I don’t feel I earned on my own. I need to say thank you to a very long list of people.

First, my parents, who have given me every opportunity to ride the best horses they could get their hands on. There are two things I can always hear when I’m in the arena; the faint whistle of my mom and the reassuring voice of my dad as I lope past. There have been a few horses that they provided that taught me just how humbling showing can be, but I learned to accept defeat and to remember there will always be another horse show. My parents have amazing horse sense and have instilled in me the appreciation of a great horse. Throughout my life they have been there to support me at every turn I chose to take, without judgement- maybe not without an opinion about how it should be done- but with total support in helping me achieve my goals. Mom and Dad, I only hope I can be as good a parent to my kids as you have been to me.

Tom, I don’t know where to begin. You have been an incredible support to me in every avenue of our lives together. I am so proud of what we have achieved together. The past year has been something I will never forget; two World Equestrian Games gold medals, USEF Equestrian of the Year and FEI World Reining Finals Champion. I couldn’t be more proud of you or more grateful to have you in my life. Thank you for taking care of me and giving me two amazing kids. Cade and Carlee, I am so proud of you both. Watching you both enjoy the horses as much as I do is the best part of my day.

Most of you knew my Grandfather, John McQuay. He may have been slightly ornery but he was always there for me; whether I needed a little cash for the day or my horse hauled from Texas to North Carolina, it was done. My grandparents Norm and Rita showed up at countless shows across the country just to watch. Rita, thank you for tailoring my show clothes- mostly shortening them! Tonight, my grandfather Norm made yet another trip to be here to support me, and I know Grandpa John and Grandma Rita are watching, too. I also have four wonderful aunts to thank. Peggy, Terri, Bessie and Jeannie, you have always been there for me. Jeannie and Terri, thank you for the countless hours you spent helping me to get to shows. And Jeannie, you did you very best to teach me to keep my heels down and clean my tack! The entire McCutcheon family, thank you for babysitting, kid hauling, horse hauling, and providing some great horses for me.

And I couldn’t ask for better friends. The entire horse industry has brought the most extraordinary people into my life. Dick and Barb Waltenberry have been taking pictures of me since I was about two or three years old, and recorded my riding history in the Reining world. In addition to that, when I need them, they came and photographed our wedding. So many of you have played a large part in getting me here. Ken and Diane Eppers, thank you for helping me get my first walk trot pony. Diane said, “Jughead only walks and trots. When it’s time to lope I have another pony for her.” But Tim thought I could make Jughead lope, and I did! Right after she kicked Tim in the leg, that pony and I loped at a very high speed across the field, right under a creep feeder, which is where she left me hanging on the fence. My Mother and Diane were so impressed they decided it was time for that new pony. Pat, Chuck and Mimi Laubersheimer, thank you for helping raise me and giving me the honor of showing Rustybuck. He definitely got me hooked on horse showing. Debbie, thank you for the countless mornings you were up before the sun getting my ponies and horses braided for the Hunter shows, and for being there the moment the gates opened for my very first Reining. If you hadn’t been standing there with me, there’s a strong possibility I would have gone straight back to the barn! You have been there since the beginning. Kelly, thank you for a friendship I cannot describe- from the age five to this very day. Andi, thank you for being a great friend, always making sure I do only four spins and being at the gate with a smile and sometimes a laugh when I come out. Monica, thank you for the hours of behind the scenes help and dedication you have given me. No matter the time of day or night, if I need help with horses, kids, or my name stitched on something you never hesitate to take care of it for me. The Hendricks, the Bergens, the Heikes, the Pauls and all the Latimers, you have all been great friends and have given me some of the funniest and best memories of my life. All of you have donated your time for the youth clinics whenever I’ve asked, and I thank you for that. Except Duane, who still owes me one! Kim, you have been a great friend both inside and outside the arena. There are very few people I would want to be a Co-Champion with, but I am proud to say we won the NRBC together. Dr. John McCarroll, thank you for helping my horses be the best they can and always reassuring me they will be fine by the horse show. And to the countless people that have worked for my parents and for Tom and me- you guys have played a huge part in my success. Debbie, Mark, Brian, Ben, Helen, Barbara, Luke, Jared, Stefano, Gunny, Melanie, Sebastian, Joe, Megan, Marco, Lars and Roger, thank you all. And Barb, thank you for giving Tom and me fourteen years of extraordinary dedication to our business and for being a great friend. I’m looking forward to the next fourteen!

All the people who have supported McQuay Stables and Tom McCutcheon Reining Horses, you all have had a hand in making all our successes possible. Sarah Willeman, Roxanne Koepsell, Bob Stinner, Curtis Burlin, Lyle Lovett, The Kimmels, The Silvas, and Dr. Steve Harris, thank you all so very much.

All of these people have been a part of whatI am today and have touched my life and my career in their own special ways. You all have given me belief in myself and that has been a huge part of my success in the arena.

Of course I couldn’t achieve anything without the great partners I’ve had in the show arena: Champs Susie, Rustybuck, Peppermint Bon Bon, Stallone, Silver Spirit, Biko, Miss Okie Too, Doc Bronson, Kaliflower, Jiffy Pop, Cross Over Rosie, Hollywood Striker, Mi Hollywood Darlin, Jodies Doc Tari, Don’t Miss This, Rawhides Banjo, I Spin For Chics, Haidachino Hollywood, Smart Scat, West Coast Mizzen and now Always Gotyer Gunsup. I want to thank them for giving me their hearts time and time again.

To be in the company of people who have made such a huge impact on the Reining horse industry is truly an honor. I hope I can continue to help our sport grow. It means so much to me to join my father and all the great horsemen in the NRHA Hall of Fame. I will remember this night forever.”

History was made at the Kentucky Horse Park.  This is the first time that the World Equestrian Games have been held on US soil and today was the inaugural Medal ceremony of the Games.  Fittingly enough, it was for the only discipline to have originated in the United States, Reining, and the Gold was awarded to none other than the United States of America!
The opening session started at 9AM Saturday morning with the first go of the Team Competition. The first section saw the USA’s Tim McQuay, riding David Silva’s Hollywoodstinseltown, shoot to the top of the leader board with a score of 220.5. Martin Muhlstatter for Austria riding his wife, Kim Dooley’s Wimpys Little Buddy were right behind with a great run and a score of 219.5! It was a fun section to watch with dressage superstar, Anky van Grunsven debuting in Reining on the WEG stage! She showed Whizashiningwalla BB. for owner Arthur Beack, for Team Netherlands to a strong score of 211!
The afternoon session crowd was larger and louder than the morning and they were not disappointed. They got off to a great start with the second rider for Italy, Stefano Massignan piloting Arcese Quarter Horses’ Yellow Jersey to a huge score of 224 to take the lead in the Individual Standings. Just two riders later, USA’s Craig Schmersal got close to Massignan’s score with Mister Montana Nic, for owner Erika Smith, by marking a 223.5. Those top scores would dominate the rest of the section. The last rider to enter the arena was Germany’s Grischa Ludwig aboard Hot Smokin Chex for owner Curtis Hof. The pair laid down a fantastic run that culminated with great stops and a score of 220.5 to tie Tim McQuay for third in the standings.

After the strong showing Saturday, the US was leading going into Sunday’s competition. Tom McCutcheon started things off for the Team in the morning section by laying down a blistering 224 with Gunners Special Nite, owned by Sarah Willeman and Turnabout Farm.  The score tied them with Italy’s Stefano Massignan and Yellow Jersey. Those would stay at the top of the leader board until Shawn Flarida and RC Fancy Step entered the arena.  Flarida piloted the Buffalo Ranch owned RC Fancy Step to a massive score of 227.  The scores to follow were strong but not enough to catch the United States.  The final results, Team USA with the Gold, Team Belgium with Sliver and Team Italy with the Bronze.

With such an impressive showing in the Team competition, we are assured of an amazing Individual Final on Thursday.  The top 15 from the Team Competition advance to the Individual Final, along with the top five from the consolation round to be held on Tuesday.

Tom McCutcheon & Gunners Special Nite, Tim McQuay & Hollywoodstinseltown, Shawn Flarida & RC Fancy Step, Craig Schmersal & Mister Montana Nic – The Dream Team

Hollywood Dun It is featured in this month’s edition of Quarter Horse News!

Quarter Horse News

Tim McQuay was featured, along with Tom McCutcheon, on the 2010 Radio Show!  The 2010 Radio Show is based out of Lexington, Kentucky and is a great source for all things relating to the World Equestrian Games!

2010 Radio Show

For Tim and Colleen McQuay, Hollywood Dun It was a dream come true.

Tim showed the flashy dun stallion in the 1986 National Reining Horse Association Futurity and won the 1987 NRHA Derby Open Championship. When he discovered “Dun It’s,” owners Cliff and Gwen Steif, were selling the horse, Tim wanted to buy him, but the price of $100,000 was a little steep. However, his wife, Colleen, convinced him they couldn’t let this opportunity slip away, and with a little creative financing, the McQuays became Dun It’s owners in 1987.

Although Dun It had proven himself in the show pen, Tim knew if the stallion was to be successful in the breeding shed, his offspring would have to be just as talented as their sire and that wouldn’t be known until they were started under saddle.

“When we bought Dun It as a 4-year-old, we were on a grace period,” Tim said. “He was so beautiful and athletic and had attracted a lot of attention so we had a lot of people who wanted to breed to him. I figured we had three years to pay for him and see if he was a sire.”

It didn’t take long with Melodys Dun It, a stallion from Dun It’s first foal crop born in 1989, finishing third in the 1992 NRHA Futurity Open Finals. The next year’s Futurity saw the palomino stallion’s full brother, Dunnit Like A Cowboy, winning the open reserve title. In all, Dun It’s first two foal crops earned more than $200,000.

“It was just easy going from there,” Tim said.

By the time Dun It was 16, he became the youngest NRHA sire at the time to reach the million-dollar mark. He was the first $2 million sire (2000), $3 million sire (2002), $4 million sire (2004) and $5 million sire (2007).

Despite passing away in 2005, the McQuays’ dream continues with Dun It’s offspring still winning in the reining arena and helping the NRHA Hall of Fame inductee stallion surpass the $6 million sire mark.

“We’ve bred a few mares with frozen semen but nothing like we used to when he was alive,” Tim said. “Dun It has gone above and beyond what a person can expect. We’re just looking forward to $7 million now.”

And without a doubt, Dun It’s legacy will continue. Tim will be riding his 6-year-old son, Hollywoodstinseltown, as part of Team USA in the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Owned by Dave and Bonnie Silva, the palomino stallion has lifetime earnings of almost $170,000.

“It’s gratification for me to be taking a son of Dun It to the World Equestrian Games,” Tim said. “It makes you feel so proud of Dun It and I’m so proud of the horse I’ll be showing too. He’s another superstar, I think, but we’ll just have to see what his babies ride like.”

McQuay Stables, located in Tioga, Texas, is a leader in the reining horse industry. Home to the late Hollywood Dun It, it now features a roster of top stallions that includes NRHA Hall of Fame Inductee Gunner, Dun Gotta Gun, Mister Nicadual, Smart And Shiney, and Hollywoodstinseltown. Tim McQuay is also an NRHA Hall of Famer and NRHA $2 Million rider, and Colleen McQuay has served the industry as an NRHA Board Member and Executive Committee for many years.

Team USA was set Saturday night for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

PLYMOUTH, Mass. (March  31, 2010) – Reining icon Tim McQuay of McQuay Stables has joined forces with SmartPak™, becoming the newest member of the Team SmartPak family.  Tim joins the list of 20+ other Olympians and professional equestrians in Team SmartPak that are currently using the patented daily dose supplement feeding system for their horses.

McQuay has been a trailblazer in the reining industry throughout his career.  He has won every major National Reining Horse Association sanctioned event, including the NRHA Futurity, the National Reining Breeders Classic, the NRHA Derby and the NRHA Superstakes.  In the past 31 years, Tim has earned reining prize money on an astounding 229 different horses, making him the NRHA’s first 2 million dollar rider and owner of its first 5 million dollar sire, the infamous Hollywood Dun It.

“Not only is Tim McQuay one of the horse world’s best athletes, but he exemplifies a superb level of horsemanship both in and out of the ring,” said Becky Minard, founder and president of SmartPak Equine. “Tim has revolutionized the world of Reining by introducing an unprecedented level of training and care for the horse, and we are thrilled to be part of his horse care program. Busy professionals like Tim can really benefit from the convenience and time savings that SmartPaks provide.”

Understanding that to keep top level reining horses healthy and performing their best requires a sound nutritional program, SmartPak is committed to offering supplements that provide targeted solutions to help offer additional support or to manage a particular problem.  And their very own SmartSupplement line of products includes over 40 cutting edge supplement formulas at a savings of up to 40% ingredient for ingredient when compared to similar products. The McQuay philosophy puts the horse first – and is a total program to attain a long-term career for a reining horse, making it a great fit with SmartPak.  With a worldwide clientele, McQuay travels stateside and abroad where he presents reining clinics and consults with horse owners and professionals.  His training program for professionals and Non Pros is one for the ages – and one that many other pros admittedly have copied.

“Supplements have been part of our game plan for years, whether they’re for the horses in training, breeding or competition, so this is an ideal match,” said McQuay. “SmartPak is a well known and respected brand with a proven supplement feeding system and over 300 products to choose from, including their very own SmartSupplement line of products. That’s why I’m so happy to be partnering with them.”

McQuay’s introduction to Team SmartPak comes on the heels of SmartPak’s new “What the Pro’s Use” campaign, giving horse owners a glimpse into what’s involved in taking care of some of the nation’s top equine athletes.  Via their website, Facebook and print advertisements SmartPak shares interviews from top riders across multiple disciplines discussing how they use supplements to keep their horses performing their best, what some of their favorite equine products are, and why they choose SmartPak for their horse’s health care needs. Whether it be the peace of mind they get from knowing their supplements will be fed correctly, the ease of traveling, retaining the potency of their supplements or the top notch customer service, every rider has their own reasons for using the leading daily dose supplement provider.  Horse owners also have the opportunity to learn more about the everyday lives of these top riders including what riding superstitions they have, what they like to do in their free time, and even what they like to eat.

SmartPak Equine was founded by riders and horse owners who ride and show Dressage, Hunter/Jumper, Polo, Eventing, Reining, Western Pleasure and have logged many miles trail riding. In addition to the SmartPak supplement system, the company offers a broad line of horse health and rider items, dog supplies, and equine and canine pharmacy items sold through the company’s catalog, Web site and retail store.

We’re excited about the Debut of the new InfoMedia Video DVD
The Art of Reining with Tim McQuay

Teaching and helping others be their best is something about which Tim McQuay is passionate. Unfortunately, the NRHA $2 Million Rider’s vast pool of knowledge has been isolated except to those lucky enough to train with him. We are pleased to announce that Tim’s expertise is now readily available since  Tim and his wife, Colleen, have teamed up with InfoMedia Video to produce “The Art of Reining with Tim McQuay” video series.

“I’ve always enjoyed sharing what I have learned over the years. In the first video, The Art of the Turnaround, that maneuver is broken down into easy-to-understand segments,” explained McQuay. “I hope that this method will help explain some of the pieces that can make a difference.”

Order now to reserve your copy – Copies will begin shipping on or around June 15, 2009.
