MCQUAY STABLES RIDER SAM SCHAFFHAUSER LANDS IN NRHA TOP 20 PROFESSIONALS!
January 1st, 2015
After a hugely successful show season in 2014, McQuay Stables Reining rider Sam Schaffhauser earned himself a place in the coveted NRHA Top 20 Professionals for the year after earning a total of over $115,810. Schaffhauser reflects on the year, saying "2014 was certainly a rewarding year. I achieved a lot of goals, and am so glad to have had so many great opportunities."
Aboard the great Gunners Tinseltown (Gunner x Miss Tinseltown), owned by Silva Reining Horses, at the Cactus Reining Classic, Schaffhauser took the Level 3 Open Championship and placed in the top 5 in Level 4. The pair earned a Level 3 Open Reserve Championship at the National Reining Breeders Classic, again earning himself a top 5 position in the L4. The NRHA Derby was also a success for the pair, earning another Reserve Championship in the Level 3 Open Derby and a top five finish in the Level 4.
Other horses adding to Schaffhauser's earnings for the year were SNS Fifth Avenue owned by Lyle Lovett, USS Nu Chic owned by Silva Reining Horses, Gunnit owned by Tanya Jenkins, Chex From A Star owned by Silva Reining Horses, and Dun TInkering Around owned by McQuay Stables, who took the win in the Level 3 Open Heritage Futurity and a Reserve Championship in Level 4. In appreciation of the many owners, mentors, and staff that helped make his year happen, Schaffhauser said, "Without the owners providing the horse power, Tim and Colleen guiding me along the way, and the staff at McQuay Stables helping, none of this success would have been possible. Hard work can only earn you so much– you have to have a support team."
Plans for Schaffhauser in 2015 include more of the same. He says, "We are going to keep riding and training horses and giving them a chance to shine in the show pen, the same way we always do. There's always hope that the cards will fall in my favor, but the reward is really in the process, watching the horses mature and achieve their individual potential."

YELLOW JERSEY AND MANDY MCCUTCHEON MAKE HISTORY AT THE 2014 WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMES!
August 31st, 2014
Scoring an impressive 227 aboard McQuay Stables' stallion Yellow Jersey in an intense Individual Medal Finals at the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France, Mandy McCutcheon became the first female to earn an Individual Medal in Reining in World Equestrian Games history. Taking home the bronze medal, Mandy joined team USA's Shawn Flarida with Gold and Andrea Fappani with Silver on the podium.
Purchased by McQuay Stables in 2013, Yellow Jersey is a ten year-old stallion by Wimpys Little Step and out of Ms Clara Melody. The maternal grandsire, Mr Melody Jac, holds a special connection for Tim McQuay, who won the NRHA Futurity aboard the stallion in 1988. McQuay reports that his two NRHA Futurity wins have accounted for his proudest moments in his long Reining career.
Also a decorated Reining veteran, Mandy McCutcheon has earned every major Non-Professional title in her career despite her young age. Reflecting on the World Equestrian Games, McCutcheon said, "There is something really special about the international stage created at the World Equestrian Games. It was amazing to be part of Team USA and I'm so grateful to my parents for trusting me to ride Yellow Jersey. The 2014 Games will always hold a special place in my heart."
YELLOW JERSEY AND MANDY MCCUTCHEON EARN WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMES TEAM GOLD!
August 27th, 2014
Late August in Normandy France brought home Gold medals to team USA, consisting of Mandy McCutcheon and Yellow Jersey, Andrea Fappani and Custom Cash Advance, Shawn Flarida and Spooks Gotta Whiz, and Jordan Larson and HF Mobster. With scores of 224, 224, 229.5, and 221 respectively, the group smashed the competition by 14 points. With their fourth consecutive Team Gold in the bag, the USA continues to be undefeated in Team Reining in the history of the World Equestrian Games.
Purchased by McQuay Stables in late 2013, Yellow Jersey has settled in well to the McQuay Stables program and certainly earned his place on the breeding roster. Tim and Colleen McQuay give credit for Jersey's success to his great mind, athletic ability, and big heart. "He is definitely a special horse. There are very few horses that have been successful with so many different riders and for so many years," Tim commented. Yellow Jersey has earned money and success for each of seven riders that have shown him.
With NRHA offspring earnings of $678,619.12, Miss Tinseltown has passed all other dams in NRHA history to earn the #1 spot on the official NRHA All-Time Leading Dams list. It was the $35,000 earned by Gunners Tinseltown and Sam Schaffhauser's L3 Open Reserve Championship and L4 5th place tie at the 2014 NRHA Derby that launched Miss TInseltown (AKA "Tina") to the top.
Schaffhauser recalls significant pressure the evening of the Derby finals, saying, "Tim told me before we went to the Derby that I needed to earn $30,000 for Miss Tinseltown. I was really hoping to help her to achieve the milestone, so I put as much pressure on myself as I ever have before. There's a lot of luck and circumstance involved in horse showing, so I was glad to get a late draw and even more glad that Colleen was sitting up in the stands studying the dirt for me and Tim was giving me last-minute pointers! There is no replacement for help from veterans like Tim and Colleen!"
Miss TInseltown, NRBC Open Champion with Tim McQuay in 1999 scoring a 233.5, was reportedly one of the greatest mares ever ridden by McQuay. "She was a great one. She performed best under pressure, and her offspring are the same."
Proud owner David Silva purchased the mare from the McQuays when it became clear that she was quite good enough to make an open horse. Originally purchased from Larry Rose for Mandy to show in the Non Pro, Miss Tinseltown proved that she was a special mare right away, according to Silva. "Colleen spotted the mare and Tim loved the feel of her so much, that I thought she was a sure bet."
Offspring of Miss Tinseltown include Hollywoodstinseltown (earner of $185,000+), Hollywood Downtown (earner of $110,000+), and Dun It in Tinseltown (earner of $62,000+). All nine of her performance age foals are money-earners, and three foals are yet to be of showing age.
Pictured above: Hollywoodstinseltown and Tim McQuay, Gunners Tinseltown and Sam Schaffhauser, and Miss Tinseltown and David Silva
Despite the tough competition, the consistent Gunners Tinseltown scored a 224 to earn L3 Open Reserve Championship and tie for 5th in the L4 Open at the NRHA Derby with Sam Schaffhauser aboard. The pair earned over $35,000 at the event, securing the major achievement of topping the NRHA All-Time Leading Dam chart for Miss Tinseltown, dam of Gunners Tinseltown. This achievement marks Reserve Championship honors for this horse at all three major NRHA events. As a three year-old, "Gunny" and Tim McQuay were NRHA L4 Open Reserve Futurity Champions. Sam Schaffhauser took the reins and earned L3 Open Reserve Championships in 2014 at both the National Reining Breeders Classic and now the NRHA Derby, also earning L3 Open Reserve Championship at the 2013 High Roller Reining Classic 4 Year Old Stakes and a L3 Open Derby Championship at the 2014 High Roller Reining Classic. Consistency has paid off for Gunners Tinseltown, with impressive NRHA Lifetime Earnings over $265,000. After a successful limited breeding season at McQuay Stables in 2014, the stallion is scheduled to continue to stand at McQuay Stables.
With only a few rides to prepare, Mandy McCutcheon and Yellow Jersey, owned by McQuay Stables, competed against a host of 2014 World Equestrian Games hopefuls at the recent Kentucky Reining Cup in Lexington. A score of 224 in the first go and 225 in the finals earned the pair a place on Team USA, a Reserve Championship in the Kentucky Reining Cup, Championship honors in the Individual competition, and Reserve honors in the USEF National Championship. Both horse and rider performed comfortably despite high stakes and immense pressure. The World Equestrian Games will take place during late August in Normandy France, and Mandy looks forward to joining seasoned professionals Shawn Flarida, Jordan Larson, Andrea Fappani, Troy Heikes, and Tom McCutcheon on the squad. Adding a seventh rider to his successful rap sheet, Yellow Jersey appears fresh and ready for the task. Mandy will be the first female and the first non pro to represent the USA at the World Equestrian Games in Reining.
April 25th, 2014
Mandy McCutcheon's ride and a score of 224 in the first go at the 2014 Kentucky Reining Cup aboard McQuay Stables' stallion Yellow Jersey sealed her NRHA $2 Million status. As the first Non Pro and first female to earn $2 Million in National Reining Horse Association competition, Mandy excitedly joins the ranks of NRHA legends and states her appreciation for all of those who have supported her journey, saying, "I have amazing parents, an excellent support team, and friends that I can count on every time. I wouldn't have made it to this milestone without the people who have challenged me and helped me. I appreciate my mom and dad letting me show Jersey so much, and it's so special to have crossed this milestone with him!"
CONGRATULATIONS TIM, 3 MILLION DOLLAR RIDER, & DAVID SILVA, MILLION DOLLAR OWNER!
December 10th, 2012
“Finals night” on Saturday evening continues to prove its challenges for our 3 year old reiners and riders, but this 2012 NRHA Futurity ended on a very positive note for Tim on Gunners Tinseltown, David Silva, and colts by Gunner.
Tim McQuay and Gunners Tinseltown (Gunner x Miss Tinseltown) marked a 225 to take the Reserve Championship and took home over $143,000, including the 5% nomination by owner, Silva Reining Horses. These earnings officially moved Tim onto the NRHA Three Million Dollar Rider list and placed owner and nominator David Silva, Sr. on the NRHA Million Dollar Owner list. The pair also won the Prime Time Open Championship that is determined by a composite score of preliminary go-rounds.
